INTERVIEWS

Question: I read you like German bands like Captain Jack?
Jack Kelly: Whether I like them a not that's a big question, I find that Bravo culture sort of fun, interesting.
Question: That's funny you mention Bravo, recently there was an article in that Fanzine about Straight Edge, what do you think of such a topic in that magazine?
Jack Kelly: Well, I mean, if they going to introduce it to young kids, cool, you know, but I heard they mentioned Korn...
Question: Not Korn, Morning Again, a new school band from New Jersey.
Jack Kelly: Yeah, ok. You know, I mean when Bravo's getting in on it, cool. Maybe there's kids that never heard of it that read magazines like that, only some teenage magazines, and they go "wow, this is something I want to check out".
Question: I heard that some local people even got into a little bit trouble for being featured in Bravo.
Jack Kelly: That's pretty stupid, just because somebody was in Bravo. I mean, it's only music. People should think more about what their priorities are. If someone says: Slapshot sucks, I hate you, Choke. Ok, you paid to come and see us, so who is the joke? If you don't like us then don't come to the show.
Question: It seems you're improving your German skills every time you're in Germany, last time in 1995 you even sang Da steht ein Pferd auf dem Flur on stage, where do you learn that kind of stuff?
Jack Kelly: I've been coming over here since 1991, you pick up phrases, watch enough TV and I read Bravo every week. I know Tic Tac Toe!
Question: Oh, They split up, too - just like Morning Again.
Jack Kelly: And now it's Sarah at Tic Tac Toe, no, Tic Tac Two now!
Question: You're pretty much into the scene, right? It seems like you're really a regular reader of Bravo...
Jack Kelly: Every week! Every Tuesday I fly to Frankfurt to the little magazine shop, it's 2 Marks 50. You have to know what's going on.
Question: And you enjoy some special pages about young people talking about their first time?
Jack Kelly: Dr Sommer Team! And photo love story, really good. See, it's really easy to pick up that German, very simple in this little stories.
Question: Yeah, and Bravo is one of the really old school fanzines, I think it exists even longer than Slapshot.
Jack Kelly: That's for sure, every kid knows it. Come on, like, where else can you see 14 year old girls naked? Don't lie, lets face it, they don't show that stuff in a regular magazine.
Question: So... what do you Jack off to?
Jack Kelly: No, you know: "abgespritzt"! [German word for "jacking off".]
Question: There were rumors about a split up.
Jack Kelly: We never said that. We don't make plans like that, it's not like we're going to say: At the end of this tour we going to break up. Some bands say it, put it on all the posters and two years later they're back on tour. Maybe this is our final tour or maybe, if were pretty successful, who knows, we come back or we have to record something, I don't know. I'm busy right now, I got a new baby at home, that's why I wanted to tour only about 2,5 weeks. Mike has work, Mark has work.
Question: What do you really enjoy doing when you're not on stage?
Jack Kelly: Most of the time I watch TV, during the day I work at Vidal Sassoon, hang out with my wife, you know, that's pretty much it. People ask me: so what are you doing this weekend, do you go out? We only like each other, we don't like other people. If you go to see a movie there's always someone talking, everybody ruins it. You go to a club there's smoke everywhere, you go to a restaurant, the service is bad. We like to stay at home, you know, let the phone ring, watch TV that's it. We love being together.
Question: Which of today's Hardcore bands do you like?
Jack Kelly: I don't listen to Hardcore at all, I collect Drum & Bass records. DJs like Low and stuff. I don't like the ghetto attitude of some bands, running around like fucking yo yo nigga, wuzzup, I'm fucking Hardcore, yo fucking shit, maaan. I go to shows when DJs from the UK are spinning in Boston.
Question: Are there any old bands you like?
Jack Kelly: Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag before Rollins got into the band, I hate Rollins. He's an asshole.
Question: There were some rumors about trouble between you and Ten Yard Fight. I heard you even got into a fight with John.
Jack Kelly: It's like that: John's girlfriend started calling me the same day they went on tour, then he was pissed. I never ever touched her, now we don't talk to each other anymore.
Question: It seems like you hate a whole bunch of people, some even say you're a little bit racist.
Jack Kelly: I just hate all people equally, white, black, Christian, Krishna, I don't give a fuck.
Question: ...and Krishna devotees are very special to you? "108" is one of my favorite songs, but you never mention Christians, Muslims or anything else but Krishnas.
Jack Kelly: When you claim to be Straight Edge, you can't seriously depend on higher forces to help. The Krishna stuff in "108" could be replaced by any other religion. This is not about gods or faith, it's about recruiting and exploiting people.
Question: Is it true that you're the only Straight Edge in the band?
Jack Kelly: No, Mark, the drummer, is Straight Edge, too.
Question: So it's not a Straight Edge band.
Jack Kelly: I write the lyrics, I'm Straight Edge, so it's a Straight Edge band.
Question: Any plans for the future?
Jack Kelly: I don't think that we'll record a new Slapshot 7", a best of Slapshot album is planned, something about 15 songs. Perhaps we'll make a new Stars And Stripes 7" one day.
